Parents and Mentors Program
Our presentations to parents and adults are designed to be an entertaining and highly informative experience that prompts them to learn more.
1. Introduction: Using stories, examples and metaphors, We open the conversation about parenting and mentoring digital kids by talking about some of my personal experiences. We discuss some of the ways parenting has changed as well as the ways it has not.
2. We look at the phenomenons of social networking, texting, chatting and discuss the role of adults in mentoring children who use or will use these methods of communication. We show some examples of these tools and share stories and suggestions about ways to learn more about them.
3. As we illustrate the many ways kids are connected and networked, I also point out the many ways that the world of business is using the same tools. This is not a conversation geared toward vilifying technology but rather a chance to talk about the changing roles and responsibilities of parents and mentors in raising healthy, well-adjusted kids.
4. We discuss video games with online components and the role of parents to make decisions that they feel are best for their kids. I seek to empower parents who feel powerless to take an active role in shaping the way kids interact with technologies.
5. We delve into the differences between the world parents and grandparents grew up in and the world our kids are navigating. We suggest that parents participate in and learn about social networks, chat and text messaging, especially if they are allowing their children use them.
6. We spent time discussing the many legitimate and professional uses for the very same tools kids use to maintain social relationships and stress the importance of teaching kids to think carefully about their online reputation. We discuss the idea of a digital footprint and the ways it is quickly becoming an online, life-long resume.
7. We demonstrate several free and useful technologies that parents and kids can use to learn, create and make useful, collaborative connections with experts, professionals and family members. We attempt to strike a balance between information about pitfalls and areas of parental concern and the myriad possibilities that exist to learn, grow and succeed in the 21st century.
8. We discuss YouTube and talk to parents about the negative and positive possibilities that exist on this video sharing network. Through examples and metaphors, we seek to help parents think deeply about their role in guiding kids in the positive use of such networks and tools.
9. We challenge parents and mentors to become actively involved in kids' lives and suggest that through learning new things and asking questions, we can and should help mentor these kids both in traditional and new ways.
10. Conclusion: We share websites and resources via my website, that can help parents get and remain informed on these constantly changing realities. We also share a link where people can download my presentation in PDF form.
